RUSH: We go to the audio sound bites and we start with media montage, the Drive-Bys versus Trump.\u00a0 This kind of speaks for itself.\u00a0 It\u2019s a montage Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.\u00a0 We have a number of different people, both in the media and out, commenting on Mike Pence as Trump\u2019s vice presidential nominee selection.<\/p>\n

KELLYANNE CONWAY: He referred to himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

LAURA ANTHONY: A former radio talk show host once described as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

MARC SANDALOW: He likes to call himself Rush Limbaugh without the caffeine.<\/p>\n

LETICIA ORDAZ: He described himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

JANET WU: Once a radio talk show host when he described himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

JOHN AVLON: Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

NATALIE BRAND: \u00a0He described himself as the Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

ROBERT COSTA: \u00a0His nickname, his moniker was Rush Limbaugh on decaf. \u00a0That\u2019s what they called Mike Pence back in the day.<\/p>\n

DAVID BROOKS: \u00a0If he was a decaf Rush Limbaugh, I don\u2019t know what he is to Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

JUAN WILLIAMS: \u00a0Mike Pence describes himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

ERIC BRADNER: \u00a0Styled himself as Rush Limbaugh on decaf.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 So I wasn\u2019t even around, I had nothing to do with the selection, and yet Trump chooses “Rush Limbaugh on Decaf” as his vice presidential running mate.\u00a0 That\u2019s the theme from the Drive-Bys.\u00a0 (interruption) No, no. In fact, the coffee that was made here right before the show is still nice and hot \u2019cause we have this Thermos pot in here, so, no, I\u2019m cool.\u00a0 But thank you for asking: I do not drink decaf.<\/p>\n

Pence used to be a radio talk show host, like everybody else.\u00a0 And he was asked to describe himself by people, and he actually is the one that came up with the phrase, “I\u2019m Rush Limbaugh on decaf,” which you can interpret it any number of ways.\u00a0 He\u2019s conservative, he\u2019s just not as energetic. He\u2019s conservative, he\u2019s not as out there. He\u2019s a little bit more reserved, maybe a little less bombastic, whatever he meant by it.\u00a0 But when he said he\u2019s Rush Limbaugh, he meant I am conservative as long as the day is long, as short as the night is short, I\u2019m conservative.\u00a0 That\u2019s what he was saying.\u00a0 And so that\u2019s what they\u2019re all harping on here.<\/p>\n

ABC This Week.\u00a0 This was Sunday morning during the roundtable, George Stephanopoulos talking with Donna Brazile and the political analyst Matthew Dowd (who used to be a Republican when the Bushes were in the White House), and they\u2019re talking about Trump naming Pence, and they had this exchange.\u00a0 This is Brazile and Dowd…<\/p>\n

BRAZILE:\u00a0 If Trump is such a great businessman and manager, why does picking a vice president — which is one of the big tests of a presidential candidate. Why does it devolve into a clown show?<\/p>\n

DOWD:\u00a0 I actually think his pick of the vice president was the first time — and I think the process… I think they messed up the process.\u00a0 It made it look like Keystone Cop situation.<\/p>\n

STEPHANOPOULOS: It sure seemed like he had second thoughts late Thursday night!<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 You know, I didn\u2019t see any of this until way after it happened.\u00a0 I read about it, and the way it was written about, “It was obvious Trump didn\u2019t want this guy! It was obvious Trump\u2019s supporters made him pick this guy and Trump was so mad about it that when the announcement ceremony went out there and pretty much let everybody know he didn\u2019t like this guy, didn\u2019t want this guy, but he was stuck with him.”\u00a0 And then later that night there were rumors about how Trump had gone to his people and said, “Is it too late to get rid of this guy?\u00a0 I don\u2019t want this guy.”<\/p>\n
