CALLER:\u00a0 Hi, Rush.\u00a0 I need your advice today.\u00a0 I began a PhD program this fall, Old Testament in Hebrew, and I\u2019m looking to buy a new computer before I start, and because of the software that we use. And I\u2019m not sure if I should buy one now or if I should wait \u2019til the spring, early 2017, when they typically make changes to the Apple models.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Oh, yeah.\u00a0 Yeah, yeah, yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Mainly I\u2019m worried about the charger, because I know that they changed the charger for the MacBooks, and I\u2019m worried if I buy a new MacBook Pro now —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 The cable.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I need a new charger.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 What do you have now?\u00a0 What are you using now?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 You\u2019re gonna laugh at me if I tell you.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 No, I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 I have an early 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 A 2011, 13-inch, that\u2019s a great machine.\u00a0 In fact, the 2011, 13-inch MacBook, that\u2019s one of the greatest computers they ever made.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a Retina screen, right?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Optical CD drive in it?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Yes, sir.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of their still top-selling computers because of the price, and people somehow still want a DVD drive in it.\u00a0 Here\u2019s all I know. The MacBook Pro line — and this is all rumor. Nobody knows.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 The MacBook Pro line is supposed to be refreshed by the end of the year.\u00a0 And you can probably count on the fact that they\u2019re gonna use USB-C instead of the current MagSafe like you have on your 13-inch, so they will probably change cables and charging mechanisms and so forth.\u00a0 But if you\u2019re not thinking of buying a new computer \u2019til the first quarter of next year anyway, I\u2019d wait.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 You think I should wait.\u00a0 Well, the problem I have is my processor is a 2.3 and has the core i5 and so it\u2019s beginning to run really slow, especially with some of the language software that I have to use.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Yeah, I know, but you said you weren\u2019t thinking of upgrading until early next year.\u00a0 Are you thinking of upgrading in like the next couple of months?<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 I had thought about upgrading before school starts.\u00a0 I\u2019d hate to spend the money and then —<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Well, look, if you went out and bought the current 13- or 15-inch MacBook Pro, you\u2019re gonna have, just within its own stand-alone universe, one heck of a machine.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 You\u2019re gonna have a great processor. You\u2019re gonna have, if you want, a discrete graphics card.\u00a0 It depends on how you want to outfit it, how much you want to pay.\u00a0 There\u2019s always gonna be a new computer coming, and there\u2019s always gonna be a faster processor coming, and there\u2019s always gonna be new technology no matter when you buy.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 The thing is, if it\u2019s coming next month, yeah, wait.\u00a0 If it\u2019s coming in two months, wait.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not coming for six or seven months, and nobody even knows, it\u2019s all rumor, and your need is immediate.\u00a0 And I\u2019m sure Apple would work with you on a trade-in at some point if you really wanted to work — I\u2019m not giving away policy.\u00a0 I\u2019m just saying you could trade these things in or sell them and upgrade whenever you want.<\/p>\n

You do not get full value when you sell, but upgrading, they\u2019re trying to make that easier, with the phones anyway, and I\u2019m sure with their computers as well.\u00a0 But, at the end of the day, since you don\u2019t know when this new one\u2019s coming, it\u2019s just a rumor, and you know it has to be soon, they haven\u2019t refreshed \u2019em in a year, so you know it\u2019s coming at some point.\u00a0 The odds are, based on the way Apple rolls out new products, it will be in the fourth quarter.\u00a0 So if you want the latest, greatest and you can wait six months instead of two, do it.\u00a0 If you need it right now it, and you can\u2019t wait, then go get what they have now.\u00a0 It\u2019s absolutely fabulous.<\/p>\n

CALLER:\u00a0 Thank you very much.\u00a0 You know, the frustrating part is they always upgrade it so quickly and then every time I get a new computer, a new one comes out. “Man, I should have waited.”<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 On the Mac line it\u2019s not as fast as it is on the iPad and phone.\u00a0 I mean, the upgrade\u2019s a little slower because they\u2019re prisoners to intel and how fast intel can upgrade the processors, which is a whole ‘nother thing Apple might do on their own someday.\u00a0 And intel just announced that they\u2019re slowing down their upgrade process on processors anyway.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m hesitant to tell you what I would do.\u00a0 That\u2019s the data that I would have.\u00a0 I always, myself, I always wait.\u00a0 When I think I\u2019m within six months or three months, I wait for what I think is coming. Even if it\u2019s just based on rumor, I wait for the upgrade. If I can deal with what I have now for some more months, I do.<\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Since we had a call on Apple, I\u2019ve gotta share with you I\u2019m getting more than the usual number of emails from people who know that I occasionally install Apple beta software on the iPhone software.\u00a0 And people are asking me — it\u2019s really strange, too — why I think there\u2019s been so much time since the first beta, \u2019cause usually in two weeks, beta 2 comes along.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why people are asking me.\u00a0 I don\u2019t talk about it that much.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll give you my theory since I\u2019m getting so many emails.<\/p>\n

I actually think that the first beta combined beta 1 and beta 2 because this beta has excellent battery life.\u00a0 Usually first betas don\u2019t.\u00a0 This first beta is pretty solid, not like usual first betas.\u00a0 For some reason they combined \u2019em.\u00a0 I think beta 2 comes July 5.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just predict it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just make a prediction right now.\u00a0 We\u2019ll find out next week.<\/p>\n
