RUSH:  Well, the US Open\u2019s underway in Oakmont Country Club, Oakmont, Pennsylvania.  It\u2019s actually just northeast of Pittsburgh.  And it\u2019s the hardest golf course I\u2019ve ever played, and it is by reputation maybe the most difficult golf course ever played for the US Open.  And it\u2019s supposed to be… I played it as part of a Boys and Girls Club charity tournament about three weeks ago, which means it was set up for the Open.  The rough was where it is, the fairways were narrow, the greens were fast.  It\u2019s the second time I\u2019ve played it.  And for those of you…<\/p>\n

They had a bunch of rain delays. They\u2019re about ready to get started here, I think, for the third time.  The early starts still have not finished today, so they\u2019re gonna be hustling to catch this thing up by Sunday.  They\u2019ll do it, but they\u2019re gonna have to play starting on both number one and number 10, maybe even Saturday, especially if there\u2019s more rain today and tomorrow.  But for those of you that end up watching this on TV, these guys playing this game make it look so easy.  And I\u2019m telling you: This golf course…<\/p>\n

One of the reasons why these guys are — and you got some people three under right now, two or three under, five under, I think. I can\u2019t conceive a Johnny Miller shooting a 63 on this golf course.  He did in 1973 in the final round to win it.  But one of the reasons… As you watch this, one of the reasons that these guys are able to make it look easy, even though it\u2019s even not for them, is they are so long off the tee that their second shots are with shorter irons. They\u2019re able to come in with a much higher shot and hold the greens much easier, versus schlubs like me. <\/line><\/p>\n

You know, I hit the ball. I can hit the ball fairly well for my handicap.  I\u2019m 240 to 260.  But you\u2019ve got number 18 here, which is practically a 500-yard par 4. It\u2019s 400 and some odd. My second shot is a 3-wood, and I still don\u2019t have a prayer getting there.  And, if I luck out, it\u2019s gonna end up in a sand trap.  They\u2019re not shooting 3-woods on their second shots on par 4s or par 5s, even.  These guys are so long… Dustin Johnson, on a 400-yard par 4, was hitting a wedge in for his second shot. <\/p>\n

As long as these guys keep it in the fairway off the tee, they\u2019re going to make this course look… There\u2019s nothing tougher than a US Open course.  It\u2019s different from any course any amateur ever plays.  Augusta would be the same way if you ever had the chance to go there.  But the way they set these courses up with the rough and the fairways being so… The greens are like glass, they\u2019re so fast.  Now they\u2019re slow. They\u2019ve had so much rain, the greens have slowed up and it\u2019s confusing these guys after three days of facing pool tabletop greens. <\/p>\n

And I just wanted to mention this, because the key here really, for them, is they hit it so long off the tee that their second shots are so much shorter than the average rank amateur going in there, and it leads me to another… I\u2019m not gonna get into it today.  The golf businesses struggles to keep people playing it.  It\u2019s so hard, people take the game up and they quit.  At any one time there\u2019s 24 million people playing.  They\u2019re not able to grow the number because it\u2019s so hard to learn.  And you watch it on TV, you see these guys hitting 300, 350; you wonder what that\u2019s like.<\/line><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll never be able to do it. You\u2019re not born with the swing you need to do it, but the golf club people have it really tough because they can\u2019t keep people playing the game, it\u2019s so damn hard.  And there are things that could be done to change that, I think.  But that\u2019s for another day.  <\/p>\n

RUSH:  No, no, no.  Now, don\u2019t misunderstand me.  Of course, the guys that win the tournament are putting lights out that week, too.  There\u2019s no… But I\u2019m just telling you, if you can\u2019t hit the ball long off the tee, you don\u2019t have a prayer.  You can talk about “drive for show, putt for dough.”  If you\u2019re not off the tee long and in the fairway, you don\u2019t have a prayer.  I don\u2019t care who you are, playing any game, any golf.  You know, and that\u2019s what golf needs to fix.  People can\u2019t hit it far off the tee and they give up the game \u2019cause it isn\u2019t any fun.  <\/p>\n

RUSH:  Yeah, watching the US Open here.  Number seven is a 684-yard par 5, or 680.  Now, a little downhill to the right, but still.  When we played, it wasn\u2019t that far.  I mean, they\u2019re “playing the tips,” obviously. But I\u2019ll just give you an idea how far these guys hit the ball. I\u2019m telling you, that matters more than anybody on a commentator side wants to talk about.  <\/p>\n
