RUSH: From our buddy Jacob Tapper, ABC\u2019s Nightline. “Smiley and West: Poverty, Income Inequalities in US Could Lead to UK-Like Riots — On Nightline last night,” this is Jake Tapper writing, “we sat down with PBS and radio talk show host Tavis Smiley and Princeton University professor Dr. Cornel West about their Poverty Tour.”<\/p>\n
Now, here you have two paragons of reasonableness, Tavis Smiley and Cornel West (laughing), and they\u2019re on their poverty tour — and, yeah, we want to roll back the War on Poverty, too, \u2019cause it\u2019s an utter failure. Look at how many trillions have been transferred since the mid-sixties on the war on poverty, and to this day Tavis Smiley and Cornel West still have to do a poverty tour. We\u2019ve fought 50 years of the war on poverty, and still two great Americans, Tavis Smiley and Cornel West have to stop everything they\u2019re doing and go on a poverty tour because the government\u2019s war on poverty hasn\u2019t worked!<\/p>\n
“West, noting that the president has a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr., in the Oval Office, said King ‘weeps when he sees poor and working people suffering and no fundamental focus.\u2019 Asked if the riots we\u2019ve seen in the UK…” (interruption) No, I guess he means the bust weeps. He says here, King “weeps when he sees poor and working people…” He says the bust, the bust. You might want to investigate a miracle there, Cornel, if that\u2019s happening. “Asked if the riots we\u2019ve seen in the UK could happen here because of these problems,” Cornel West and Tavis Smiley on Nightline last night said yeah. “‘One percent of the people owning and controlling more wealth than 90% of Americans, that\u2019s unsustainable.<\/p>\n
“‘That math won\u2019t hold up long-term. There is a bubbling, there is a restlessness.'” Does this not go to exactly what I was saying yesterday. Everybody thinks, if they\u2019re under 30, and if they\u2019ve been educated at all in the public schools of this country — or if they\u2019ve been anywhere near left-wing political activism — they have been propagandized, they have been led to believe that everybody gets a portion of a nation\u2019s wealth whether they do anything or not. It\u2019s called “economic justice.” Whether you work or not, you get your stuff! I mean, that\u2019s what entitlement means; that\u2019s what being an American means — and especially what being a minority means, \u2019cause it\u2019s payback time! Then when you don\u2019t get your stuff when you don\u2019t do anything, you run around, you scratch your head, and wonder, “How come I don\u2019t have any stuff?”<\/p>\n
And then you look around and see everybody else has their stuff and then you see some people, even more than their stuff, they have a business. (Gasp!) “How did they get a business? That\u2019s not right, that\u2019s not fair! Where\u2019s my business? They think a business is simply a license to print money. “Where\u2019s my corporate jet? Where\u2019s my limousine? How come they have one! This isn\u2019t working out the way I was promised.” They get all upset because they think they\u2019re supposed to get their stuff whether they work or not. That\u2019s economic justice, the way they have been taught, indoctrinated, if you will. So when you hear somebody like Cornel West or Tavis Smiley start throwing around “1% of the people owning and controlling more wealth than 90% of Americans…”<\/p>\n
They think the stuff is handed out. “Obama\u2019s got the stash, and Obama ought to be making this somewhat more equal, and he\u2019s not doing it — and, furthermore, there aren\u2019t any jobs out there. Not that we really want to work, but still this isn\u2019t right!” Yeah, that\u2019s right: Cornel didn\u2019t get tickets to the inauguration, Tavis hasn\u2019t been invited to the White House. So they\u2019re on their poverty tour.<\/p>\n
“If you don\u2019t treat…” This is Cornel West: “If you don\u2019t treat poor and working people with dignity now, chickens are going to come home to roost later. And it won\u2019t be about love and justice. It will be about revenge, hatred, and then we all go under.” Well, I simply point back to yesterday\u2019s program to explain what this means. “If you don\u2019t treat poor and working people with dignity,” I mean if you don\u2019t give \u2019em their stuff, “then the chickens are gonna come home to roost later.” That\u2019s London. That\u2019s right. “America\u2019s chickensssss!” Exactly right, Reverend Wright. “And Americans\u2019 chickens coming home to roost isn\u2019t gonna be about love and justice. … It will be about revenge, hatred, and then we all go under.” It is a threat. It is a threat. Jeremiah Wright was threatening.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, so how do you “treat poor and working people with dignity” now? You give them their stuff. No, I\u2019m just asking: What does he mean by this? He means they better get their stuff! They better get their stuff. If they don\u2019t get their stuff, it ain\u2019t gonna be about love; it\u2019s gonna be revenge and hatred. We all gonna go under if the poor people and the working people aren\u2019t given their dignity now. So yesterday morning on C-SPAN, Washington Journal, the host Greta Brawner interviewed these two guys, Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, during a discussion about their poverty tour — and we still haven\u2019t learned what they\u2019re doing on it. So far, the best we can figure is they\u2019re running around making threats. They\u2019re going to DC Central Kitchen and with C-SPAN. That\u2019s some poverty tour.<\/p>\n
“Yeah, I\u2019m on my poverty tour. I stopped by C-SPAN.”<\/p>\n
“Really, is there poverty at C-SPAN?”<\/p>\n
“Well, there\u2019s a poverty of honesty, damn right! That\u2019s why we had to go there.”<\/p>\n
All right, so they\u2019re there, and the info babe Greta Brawner said, “Have you talked to President Obama about this poverty tour? Do you plan to go see him today while you\u2019re in Washington?”<\/p>\n
SMILEY: Once he got elected and my critique of him about holding him accountable to various things didn\u2019t sit so well with him or the people around him. He has not at this point, uh, come on my TV or radio programs one time since he\u2019s been in the White House. He\u2019s the first president in my professional career that hasn\u2019t invited me to the White House.<\/p>\n
RUSH: A-ha! Well, now! Now it\u2019s starting to come into focus here. Cornel didn\u2019t get any tickets to the inauguration, Tavis hasn\u2019t been invited to the White House, and, voila! They\u2019re on a poverty tour. Not even hip-hop night! They weren\u2019t invited on hip-hop night. They haven\u2019t been invited on Marian McPartland night. They haven\u2019t been invited on Stevie Wonder night. They haven\u2019t been invited on Michelle Obama, you know, watercress and vinaigrette night. They haven\u2019t been invited, period. They want their stuff and Obama\u2019s really dissing \u2019em. Yeah, at least the Dalai Lama got in and out the back door. Tavis Smiley can\u2019t get in any door! It\u2019s bad out there. Worse than we imagined. So the poverty tour continued. Where do you think they went next on their poverty tour? MSNBC!<\/p>\n

SMILEY: On C-SPAN yesterday I was specifically asked about my relationship with the President. I\u2019ve known him, been a friend. I\u2019ve known him for years, been a friend for years with him. What I said was that before he became a president, he would come on my TV show and radio show regularly. With my critique of him about not being progressive enough, trying to hold him accountable — when that critique got a little hot for him or the people around him, more expressly — they won\u2019t come on the show.<\/p>\n
WEST: It does say something, though, if a right-wing brother like Bill O\u2019Reilly can get interviews and brother Tavis can\u2019t or Roland Martin can\u2019t. That raises questions to me.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh, my gosh! (wild laughing) Right-wing brother Bill O\u2019Reilly! A Right-wing brother (laughing) like Bill O\u2019Reilly, “but brother Tavis can\u2019t or Ronald Martin can\u2019t. That kind of raises questions for me.” The question is, what does it matter? You\u2019re on a poverty tour. Obama is not starving. Neither is Michelle. What does it matter?
