RUSH: Vice President Biden went on Meet the Press Sunday, and the story is he threw the administration a curveball by saying that he\u2019s totally comfortable with gay marriage. He has no problem with it at all. In fact, he\u2019s a big advocate now. Obama hasn\u2019t said that, and now they\u2019re trying to figure out: “Did Biden just go off the reservation, go rogue, or is this a plan?” Dana Milbank in the Washington Post: “Vice President Biden\u00c2\u2019s Gay-Marriage Gaffe is Mess for White House — If Vice President Biden continues to make public appearances during this campaign, White House press secretary Jay Carney should be offered a membership in the janitors\u00c2\u2019 union” for cleaning up the mess.<\/p>\n

<\/a>“As things stand, the spokesman does not have the supplies necessary to clean up the mess Biden made in his appearance Sunday on NBC\u00c2\u2019s ‘Meet the Press.\u2019 Biden gave his full support to same-sex marriage — a position conspicuously at odds with the public stance of his boss, [“Baraka”] Obama, who is widely assumed to share Biden\u00c2\u2019s views but who says that his own thinking is ‘evolving.'” So here\u2019s the thing. To be a liberal, this is the pretzel you must twist yourself into.<\/p>\n

When Obama says he\u2019s opposed to gay marriage, you have to trust that he\u2019s lying and lying well. Because as a liberal, you have to believe that he\u2019s really for it, but he\u2019s very smart, and he can\u2019t admit it. So he can dance all around it and he can get close, but at the end of the day you have to trust he\u2019s lying. When Obama comes out during the lame-duck session and says, “We can\u2019t sunset the Bush tax cuts because it would cause the economy to slow down,” you, as a liberal, have to trust he\u2019s lying about it.<\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t really mean it.<\/p>\n

He just has to say it in order to stay viable for his next election and so forth.<\/p>\n

I assume Dana Milbank knows. With his connections, with his references to Carney, I\u2019m gonna assume here that Biden went off the reservation, that this was not some planned trial balloon or whatever. Biden went off. Because this whole piece is very simpatico to Carney and the mess he has to clean up. But the piece admits: Yeah, well, Obama\u2019s all for it. He just can\u2019t say it. Arne Duncan, the education secretary, today he said he\u2019s for gay marriage.<\/line><\/p>\n

He\u2019s trying to take some heat off Biden or whatever. They want the left to understand that Obama\u2019s for it, too. But they want the left to understand, “Obama can\u2019t say it and don\u2019t be critical of him for that.” But wait, I thought it was a majority position! What\u2019s wrong with gay marriage? I thought everybody wanted it. I thought it was so cool. Why can\u2019t Obama come out and say he\u2019s for it? Why not?<\/p>\n

“Well, really, it\u2019s not that popular?”<\/p>\n

“Oh, it isn\u2019t?”<\/p>\n

“No. It really isn\u2019t.”<\/p>\n

Well, isn\u2019t that the case of most of liberalism? It really isn\u2019t that popular? You just have to lie about it? Isn\u2019t that what\u2019s really being demonstrated here, that 99% of the Obama agenda is really not popular, and that\u2019s why Obama can\u2019t come out and tell you what he\u2019s really for and what he\u2019s really going to do, \u2019cause he doesn\u2019t stand a chance of being reelected if he did? The whole notion of gay marriage is such a popular position it\u2019s lost in 31-out-of-31 referendums in 31 states.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re voting on it in North Carolina today.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s already against the law in North Carolina, but they\u2019re going for a constitutional amendment today. You know why? Because they don\u2019t trust that a rogue judge will simply not enforce the law. So they\u2019re making it part of their Constitution. Obama was scheduled to go into North Carolina today and make a little speech on the economy. It was one of these “get in there, get it, and get out” speeches. He canceled the trip. He didn\u2019t want to be anywhere near North Carolina today while the vote on a constitutional amendment establishing marriage as that between a man and a woman was being voted on.<\/p>\n

A sample. This is from last night on CNN\u2019s Piers Morgan Tonight. Morgan said to Axelrod, “You tweeted almost immediately that what the vice president said — ‘all married couples should have the same legal rights\u2019 — is ‘precisely the POTUS position,'” Obama\u2019s position. “Do you still think everything Biden said is consistent with the president\u2019s position on gay marriage?”<\/line><\/p>\n

AXELROD: I feel, Piers, that on the policy that the vice president was describing there, that they are in complete accord. That is the president\u2019s policy. He believes that couples — uh, heterosexual couples, uh, gay couples — should have the same legal rights. And of course that\u2019s why, uh, we\u2019ve stopped, uh, uh, uh, appealing, uh, the DOMA case because, uh —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh.<\/p>\n

AXELROD: — he believes it\u2019s unconstitutional for states not to recognize, the government not to recognize, uh, marriages, uh, that are legally recognized by the state. So what the vice president was stating there was very much in keeping with that policy.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Oh, yeah, yeah! “Everything Biden said is very consistent with the president\u2019s position, Piers. Uh, except Obama is against gay marriage.” Publicly that\u2019s Obama\u2019s position. You want to hear the press conference? Grab sound bite number eight. The spokeskid, Carney, got pummeled by the press corps yesterday. And this is why I am convinced he called Dana Milbank and said, “You gotta cover me here, man, \u2019cause I can\u2019t do it. This is too big a mess that Biden made.” So, here. Listen to a montage of Carney\u2019s responses to reporters\u2019 questions about Obama\u2019s policy on gay marriage.<\/p>\n

CARNEY: I have no update on the president\u2019s personal views. … He said that his views on this were “evolving,” and I don\u2019t have an update for you on that. … The president was asked this and said that his personal views on this were “evolving.” … I think the president said that he was “evolving.” … I just don\u2019t have anything more to give to you on the issue of the president\u2019s views. … I just don\u2019t have an update for you on the president\u2019s position. … I can tell you that the president has spoken about this and that his views have not changed, and I have no update to give you on them. … I don\u2019t have an update for you on the president\u2019s personal views. … His views on this are “evolving.” … He just said they\u2019re “evolving.” … The next time the president has a news conference, if you want to ask him that, you\u2019re certainly welcome to.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay. And there\u2019s no further news here. (Carney “translation”) “The president\u2019s views are still ‘evolving.\u2019 I can\u2019t tell you what he thinks. I don\u2019t have any idea. I wouldn\u2019t tell you if I knew. I don\u2019t know what the hell he thinks. He doesn\u2019t know what he thinks! Neither of us have the guts to tell you the truth on this.
