She’s the Sex and the City fan in New York City. Hi, Megan. I’m glad you called.

CALLER: Hi, Rush. I’m a huge fan. Thanks for having me on.

RUSH: Appreciate that. Now, Megan, I just have one question.

CALLER: Sure.

RUSH: I’ve got one question, but a couple of setups. Did you watch the show as often as you could? Did you try not to miss it?

CALLER: I did. I would try every week.

RUSH: Every week. So you were a committed fan of the program?

CALLER: When it was on HBO.

RUSH: What it was on HBO, okay, good.

CALLER: Not these reruns, no.

RUSH: Now, I guess I want to ask why, but I don’t want to leave it quite that open. Did the show have a message to you, or was it just entertainment?

CALLER: Well, no, it was just entertainment. What was interesting about the show, if you saw all four women, they were each an extreme personality of all of us have a little bit of each one of those women in us.

RUSH: But what was the objective? What was the purpose?

CALLER: Venting. Venting about men, venting about —

RUSH: That’s it. Okay, venting about men. I saw the show a number of times. I didn’t watch it religiously. I saw the show a number of times. I’ll tell you what I came away with. It’s what I want to ask you. As I watched the show, all I remember about it is that that show basically told women they should be willing to do anything to get Mr. Big, to get a man, to get the guy.

CALLER: Well, to get Mr. Big, I mean how do you get better than him? I’m just kidding. Yeah, that is the message of the show. You work really hard to get the man, but you have to also remember that when the show ended, the main character still didn’t get married. She didn’t settle down with the man. They were equal at the end.

RUSH: Exactly.

CALLER: So wasn’t trying to get married and make babies.

RUSH: Right.

CALLER: It was trying to build a relationship.

RUSH: It was these New York women who were fashion plates in one instance, but they were the creme de la creme, and yet what was their focus?

CALLER: The only thing that they had a problem with, it wasn’t their careers, it wasn’t anything except for, how do I get this guy to like me?

RUSH: Yeah, how do I get the guy? Which amazed me because that was the thing that feminism wanted no woman to be engaged in. Don’t make your life revolve around a man, don’t make your happiness dependent on your relationship, and yet here is a total show, four years or whatever it went, focused on just that.

CALLER: I’m sorry to say, but that does happen a lot. I mean I’m 28, and I’m looking around, and —

RUSH: I know it does.

CALLER: — all of my friends are going through that exact problem. They’ve got great jobs, they could be doing really well in their lives, but if they don’t have a man —

RUSH: Right.

CALLER: — they’re not happy.

RUSH: Feminism is a promise that’s… I’m having a mental block on the word, but it’s a promise that’s betrayed is really what it is. ‘Cause the whole notion of feminism was, do not get a man, do not make a man the focal point of your life. Certainly your relationships are not supposed to be the primary reason you’re happy. Don’t prostitute yourself. Don’t go out there and that’s all the show was about, and these are supposedly feminist, hip.

CALLER: Supposedly, yes. And these women had it all, and the sad thing is that —

RUSH: But they were not happy, were they?

CALLER: They were not happy. But I hate to say that I have related to some episode at one point. All of my friends have related to an episode at some point. So women have been there, but so have men. That show Entourage, kind of the same thing. They’re all trying to get women. They’re just not trying to settle down with them.</line>

RUSH: Exactly. This is the point. I guess a circuitous way of getting there, is that human nature is what it is. Feminism has done everything it could to try to reorient and erase it, but they have failed, and this show is a great illustration of how and why. I mean here’s HBO, a feminist network, great liberal network, great advance, not attached to any of these societal cliches, and one of the most popular shows is all about men and women and how they behaved for hundreds of years, wearing sandals or Manolo Blahniks, it doesn’t matter, the purpose is still the same.

CALLER: Great way to put it.

RUSH: Okay. So were you sad when it ended?

CALLER: Oh, I was heartbroken when it ended. It was good entertainment. I did like it. I didn’t base my life around it.

RUSH: You didn’t. You didn’t want to be any of the four women?

CALLER: No. And I felt there was a little piece of me in each of ’em.

RUSH: Right.

CALLER: You know, there’s the one that does —

RUSH: Okay, well, then that’s good writing.

CALLER: — want to get married. It is entertainment at the end of the day.

RUSH: Okay. Just entertainment.

CALLER: Just entertainment. I wouldn’t go further that.

RUSH: Okay, well, thank you for taking the time to call.

CALLER: Hey, no problem. Again, I’m a huge fan. Thanks for hearing me out.

RUSH: I appreciate that. I really do. I’m glad you made it through. It’s a tough thing to do, and you did it, so hear, hear.

CALLER: Appreciate it.

RUSH: You bet. It’s Megan in New York City. The reason I brought this up is Sarah Jessica Parker is hosting this big dinner for Obama. Big liberal, big feminist, contest. You, too, could winner dinner at Sarah Jessica Parker’s house, and her big claim to fame is Sex and the City, and Sex and the City was about fish trying to get a bicycle. Well, feminism is women need men like a fish needs a bicycle. That’s one of their philosophies. Women don’t need men. Women shouldn’t want men. Women shouldn’t want the relationship with a man to be the focal point of their life. Here’s a show where that’s all it was about, particularly the pursuit of Mr. Big. It was a betrayal of everything feminism stood for, there it was right there on HBO. And that’s who’s cohosting this dinner for two lucky Obama voters.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Columbia, South Carolina. It’s Lauren. Lauren is one of my all-time, top ten, favorite female names. It’s great to have you on the program. Hi.

CALLER: I’m so excited I got through, and it’s just so exciting to talk to you, and I know probably your top name now is Kathryn — which, I don’t blame you. She’s absolutely beautiful.

RUSH: You know, today is our two-year anniversary.

CALLER: Well, happy anniversary!

RUSH: Two years.

CALLER: Congratulations.

RUSH: It just seems like two days. It seems like it was just yesterday that Elton John was singing to us at that giant ballroom at the Breakers Hotel.

CALLER: Well, I would have loved to have seen more pictures but the few that you released were absolutely beautiful.

RUSH: Thank you. Thank you very much.

CALLER: And I’ve been married 32 years last month.

RUSH: You don’t even sound 32.

CALLER: Thank you.

RUSH: You don’t.

CALLER: I have a couple of questions, a couple comments. One: The dinner with Sarah Jessica Parker.

RUSH: Yeah?

CALLER: What are the guidelines for that? I have not been able to research it.

RUSH: Well, I haven’t, either. I just listened to the ad. You have to go to an Obama website, and what they’re not telling you is that it’s a donation website. And all you’re doing is putting yourself on a mailing list for future fundraising.

CALLER: Right, which I don’t want to do.

RUSH: So it’s assumed that Republicans are not gonna go there. It’s a donation place, so they’re assuming that the only people that could win are gonna be sympathetic to Obama and his policies.

CALLER: Mmm-hmm. Well, I was asking Snerdley. I said, “What do you think, they have a minimum bid on that? They have a minimum donation? I mean, what do you do? Do you give $10?”

RUSH: No, they can’t do that. They can’t put a dollar amount on it. It’s a sweepstakes. We do this at Two If By Tea, but ours are genuine and real. They can’t put a dollar amount on it. The thing that leading people to believe is it’s gonna be a random selection.

CALLER: Sure it is. (snickers)

RUSH: But you know Obama’s gonna be selected. The Secret Service is gonna have a say in who shows up at this place. I mean, it’s gonna be tightly controlled.

CALLER: Mmm-hmm. It’s just such a farce. It’s so ridiculous. I, too, was a fan of Sex and the City. I mean, I loved it for the entertainment, and it was so removed from my life that it was like, “Oh, my God. People actually think like this, or write like this, or live like this?”

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: And it just makes me sick when celebrities come out and support —

RUSH: They’re brain-dead! Look, look. The analysis of why celebrities are the way they are politically, we’ve been through that countless times. And you know them without having to be told. The whole point of this that needs to be made is that Obama is really narrow-casting here. For a man running for president, this is something that hurts. Most people are never gonna win this thing. Most people are never gonna enter this thing. This thing does not say a thing about jobs or the future of the country. This pure… This is Barack Kardashian. This is not helpful to him.

Don’t doubt me on this.

RUSH: Here’s Megan. She’s the Sex and the City fan in New York City.
