RUSH: The media is becoming a joke. Well, it\u2019s been a joke for the longest time. We had Stephanopoulos and Brian Ross yesterday<\/a>, and we have Stephanopoulos back again today. You know, I knew this yesterday. I just didn\u2019t have the backup for it. But they totally misquoted the mother of this guy in Colorado and made it look like she was confirming for them that they had the right guy. When she said, “You\u2019ve got the right person,” she was talking about herself. It has just become a joke.<\/p>\n

Even Jon Stewart saw it. You know, I never watch Comedy Central. I probably shouldn\u2019t admit this, because the younger demos are gonna wonder, “What kind of screwball is Limbaugh?” I just never do. Comedy Central is just not something on my channel-selector radar. It just never has been. So even Jon Stewart rips Brian Ross. He said, “What does it take to get fired at ABC?” It\u2019s a good question. “What does it take to get fired at ABC?” What does it take to get fired at NBC? <\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: This is George Stephanopoulos. I mentioned this at the top of the program. This is last Friday morning on Good Morning America…<\/p>\n

STEPHANOPOULOS: A reporter has spoken with James Holmes\u2019 mother. She spoke briefly at ABC News this morning. I want to read this off my screen right here. He reports that she had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting; had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved. This is a quote: “You have the right person,” she said, speaking on gut instinct. Quote, “I need to call the police and I need to fly out to Colorado.” <\/p>\n

RUSH: “[S]he had awoken unaware of news of the shooting”? They woke her up! They called her at five o\u2019clock in the morning from ABC News. They woke her up. And then she convicted him on ABC. So, anyway, that\u2019s how they reported it. Of course this mother is beside herself in every which way imaginable. So an attorney representing the family, Lisa Damiani, read a statement from Arlene Holmes, the mother of the shooter.<\/p>\n

DAMIANI: “I was awakened by a call from a reporter from ABC on July 20 about 5:45 in the morning. I did not know anything about a shooting in Aurora at that time. He asked if I was Arlene Holmes and if my son was James Holmes who lives in Aurora, Colorado. I answered, ‘Yes, you have the right person.\u2019 I was referring to myself. I asked him to tell me why he was calling, and he told me about a shooting in Aurora. He asked for a comment. I told him I could not comment because I did not know if the person he was talking about was my son, and I would need to find out.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: So that\u2019s how the family says the call happened according to the shooter\u2019s mother, read by a lawyer. And when she said, “You have the right person,” she says she was talking about herself. She was telling a reporter, “Yeah, you\u2019ve got the right person,” meaning “Me.” So you couple this with Brian Ross reporting (paraphrased), “Well, it\u2019s the Tea Party! I found a link! James Holmes is in the Tea Party! Yep, there you go.” I\u2019ve heard a lot of people talk about this, by the way.<\/p>\n

Folks, I\u2019ve been somewhat amused and amazed as I\u2019ve listened to people attempt to excuse and explain it. I\u2019ve heard people say, “Well, you know, Brian Ross, he\u2019s a great reporter. He\u2019s a great investigative reporter. He just, you know, jumped the gun in there. That\u2019s what it is being investigative reporter. You want to be first. He wanted to get in there first!” That\u2019s not an excuse. If you\u2019re an investigative reporter, if that\u2019s gonna be your moniker or title, you\u2019ve got (I would think) a standard that would apply to an investigative journalist. And that would be to investigate. <\/p>\n

So what did he do? <\/p>\n

Did he go to Tea Party websites in Colorado and try to find this guy\u2019s name? <\/p>\n

If he did that, why? What made Brian Ross think “Tea Party”? As I said yesterday, “Can any of you cite for me an example where there has been violence, shooting, murder, rape, mayhem, at a Tea Party gathering?” Oh, wait, there was one. Yes, it was in St. Louis with one of the children of the Widow Carnahan. A black conservative got beat up by the SEIU guys. That\u2019s right. So the violence at that Tea Party event happened when Obama\u2019s union thugs came in and beat up a black conservative. <\/p>\n

Right.<\/p>\n
