CALLER: Hey, Rush.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Hey.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m a telecommunications student at the University of Florida, and it kind of goes hand-in-hand with the journalism school there.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: And one of the things they teach us early on is that the people that we tell the news to and the stories, they\u2019re not very smart. They\u2019re not as smart as us so we gotta dumb down the stories for them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do they say things like most people read at a seventh or sixth grade level, things like that?<\/line><\/p>\n

CALLER: Yep, things exactly like that.<\/p>\n

RUSH: So they tell you that you have to dumb yourself down in order to relate to your audience?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, exactly.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, how does that make you feel? You\u2019re in journalism school, you\u2019re in telecommunications. How does it make you feel when they tell you that the people you\u2019re gonna be informing or talking to are basically idiots?<\/p>\n

CALLER: It seems like I\u2019m not gonna be able to tell them a lot of the story that I want to tell.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But what\u2019s incorporated? Isn\u2019t part and parcel of that, you gotta have a little contempt for people who are not very smart? If you run around, if you start your day thinking you\u2019re doing your job for dumb people, then you\u2019re gonna be arrogant. You\u2019re gonna be condescending toward them. You\u2019re gonna hold \u2019em in a little bit of contempt. You\u2019re gonna resent them a little bit. I maintain that this is one of the many roots of the problems of journalism: The idea that their audience doesn\u2019t know anything.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: The audience doesn\u2019t know anything, and they\u2019re not capable. That\u2019s why when the audience complains… You know, it\u2019s the only business, Paul, where the customer\u2019s always wrong. You complain to a newspaper or a television station and they\u2019ll say, “Well, you know, you just really don\u2019t know how we operate here. You don\u2019t know how we put the news together. You just don\u2019t know.” The customer\u2019s always wrong. You accuse \u2019em of bias, and you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re not biased! You\u2019re an idiot. You\u2019re stupid.”<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t say that to people, but you\u2019re being taught that that\u2019s how you have to realate to \u2019em. I, El Rushbo, on the other hand, am just the opposite. When I\u2019m talking about the media, I make the mistake of thinking that they\u2019re smart. They\u2019re not. They are actually, I think, their audience. I think they\u2019re dumber than their audience, to be frank with you. But I, on the other hand, treat everybody listening to this program as though they know exactly what I\u2019m talking about every time I open my mouth.<\/p>\n

They may not know the information I\u2019m gonna impart, but I assume you\u2019re capable of learning everything I am.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s a great, great point.<\/p>\n
