RUSH: Here’s Joe in Fulton, New York, as we go back to the phones on Open Line Friday. Hello.
CALLER: Hi, Rush.
RUSH: Hey.
CALLER: Dittos from Fulton. I’m a first-time caller, and I listened to you since the summer of 1989.
RUSH: Wow. That’s almost from the beginning. You missed everything but one year. You only missed one year.
CALLER: Yeah. The reason why I called is, we haven’t had any news about Andrew Cuomo yet or anything, and what he stands for, really, or anything. And I just wanted to ask you, are you going to use for an update the same as you used for his father Mario?
RUSH: (laughing)
CALLER: I Put a Spell on You.
RUSH: (laughing) Oh-ho. Oh, that’s… Whoa, man. That’s going way, way back in the archives. I Put a Spell on You.
CALLER: (laughing) ‘Cause your mine!
RUSH: Who was that? (interruption) Yeah, that’s right. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is who that was.
CALLER: I don’t remember, I don’t remember the name.
RUSH: Yeah, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Yeah, if Andrew Cuomo warrants it, yeah. Mike, you probably have this standing by, don’t you? Yeah, it’s amazing. It just happened to be standing by because Joe here’s been on hold for a couple of hours, plenty of time to prep for this. So let me set it up for those of you who were not here in the early years of the program. When the program started, Mario Cuomo was the Barack Obama of the Democrat Party, the man who made one speech and people were falling all over themselves. Mario Cuomo. Cuomo would go to the Notre Dame and explain why he was, as a Catholic, pro-abortion, and he would say, ‘Well, I just don’t feel I have the right to impose my religious beliefs on the nation,’ but he had no compunction about imposing his tax beliefs or economic beliefs on the nation. But Mario Cuomo… For those of you who are pretty young and don’t remember, Mario Cuomo was the first Barack Obama, only about half of it. If Cuomo had been minority, who knows? He might have been elected. Might have been. One speech in San Francisco. One speech and a whole bunch of appearances on Larry King Alive and back then it struck me as host of the program that whenever Cuomo spoke, people just went gaga. Like they do with Obama. It didn’t matter what he said. It was how well he said it, and so we had an update theme whenever Mario Cuomo was in the news, and it was by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.
(I Put a Spell on You)
RUSH: I put a thhhh’spell on you.
(continued playing of song)
RUSH: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins literally losing it there in the recording studio! It’s one of those classic R&B songs from the fifties that got it all started, and that was our Mario Cuomo update theme, one of a couple that we had. ‘Because you’re mine!’ I Put a Spell on You.
