Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was interviewed by Seattle Times business reporter Melissa Allison on the turnaround of his company. Since Starbucks was a vocal proponent of Obamacare – and Schultz was invited to the White House during the whole tussle – Ms. Allison asked how it has worked out.

His answer started with spin: “Well there’s no plan that would be a perfect plan,” he said, “but the intent of the bill and the heartfelt commitment to insure the uninsured is the right approach.” But then he added: “I think as the bill is currently written and if it was going to land in 2014 under the current guidelines, the pressure on small businesses, because of the mandate, is too great.”

A simple “why?” from the reporterette would have been in order – seeking an explanation from the CEO why Obamacare is a threat to small businesses. But there was no follow-up. Still, this is stunning. Here we are, a year later, and one of the most visible proponents of Obamacare is openly saying that the pressure it will place on small businesses will be too great to bear if it is implemented.

Now, I don’t want to be too hard on Ms. Allison. Perhaps she thought Mr. Schultz’s answer said it all. Or perhaps the Seattle Times didn’t want to make a big deal of his admission. But one thing is clear. Aside from being unconstitutional … Obamacare is a loser. And even Obama’s latte-drinking, latte-making supporters can no longer hide it.
